Oscar Gustav Rejlander Collection

Oscar Gustav Rejlander was a pioneering Victorian photographer who is credited with being one of the first to use multiple negatives to create composite images. He was born in Sweden in 1813 and moved to England at the age of 20. Rejlander began his career as an artist, but soon turned to photography, which he saw as a way to capture the beauty of nature and people more realistically than painting could. He developed a technique for combining multiple negatives into single images, which he called "combination printing". His work was highly regarded by many prominent figures of his time, including Charles Darwin and Lewis Carroll. Rejlander's photographs were often used as illustrations for books and magazines during the 19th century. Although he died in poverty in 1875, his influence on photography has been long lasting; his techniques are still used today by photographers around the world.
