Gordon Parks Collection

Gordon Parks was an American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer. He is best known for his photographic essays for Life magazine and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. Parks was born in Fort Scott, Kansas in 1912. He began his career as a freelance photographer in St. Paul, Minnesota before moving to Chicago where he worked for the Farm Security Administration and then at Vogue magazine. In 1948 he joined Life magazine where he became one of the first African-American photographers hired by a major publication. His photographs often focused on social issues such as poverty and racism in America during the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to photography, Parks also wrote books about his life experiences including The Learning Tree (1963) which was adapted into a film directed by him in 1969; wrote music; directed films; created television programs; and composed symphonies. His work has been exhibited around the world including at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City and The Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C.
