Antonio Pigafetta Collection

Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian explorer and writer who is best known for his first-hand account of the voyage of Ferdinand Magellan. He was born in 1491 in Vicenza, Italy, and studied law at the University of Padua. In 1519, he joined Magellan's expedition to circumnavigate the world and served as a navigator on board one of the ships. After Magellan's death in 1521, Pigafetta continued to serve under Juan Sebastian Elcano until they completed their journey in 1522. His detailed account of their travels was published as Primo Viaggio Intorno al Mondo (First Voyage Around The World) and is considered one of the most important works on early exploration. He later returned to Italy where he wrote several other books about his travels before dying in 1534.
