John Frederick Peto Collection

John Frederick Peto (1854-1907) was an American trompe l'oeil painter who specialized in still life. He was born in Philadelphia and studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He began his career as a sign painter and then moved on to painting theatrical scenery. In 1876, he opened a studio in Philadelphia and began painting still lifes, which were heavily influenced by William Harnett's trompe l'oeil style. His works often featured everyday objects such as books, newspapers, coins, pipes and bottles arranged on shelves or tables with a strong sense of realism that made them appear three-dimensional. His works were highly sought after during his lifetime and are now considered important American trompe l'oeil painting from the late 19th century.
