Alexandre Dumas pere (1802-1870) was a French author and playwright best known for his historical adventure novels, such as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. He was born in Villers-Cotterêts, France, to a family of mixed race. His father was an aristocrat from Haiti and his mother was the daughter of a French innkeeper. Dumas wrote over 100 plays and novels during his lifetime, many of which were adapted into films or television series. He is credited with popularizing the swashbuckling genre in literature as well as introducing elements of realism into it. His works are still widely read today and have been translated into numerous languages around the world.
