John Ogilby Collection

John Ogilby (1600–1676) was an English translator, cartographer, and publisher. He is best known for his large-scale atlas of the British Isles, Britannia. This atlas was the first to be printed in England and it set a new standard for accuracy and detail. Ogilby also wrote several books on classical literature and mythology as well as works on navigation and travel. He was appointed Royal Cosmographer to Charles II in 1675, a position he held until his death the following year. His work had a lasting impact on cartography in Europe during the 17th century, with many of his maps being used by later generations of mapmakers.
