Joseph Nollekens (1737-1823) was an English sculptor, who is considered to be one of the greatest British sculptors of the 18th century. He was born in London and apprenticed to a woodcarver, before studying at the St. Martin's Lane Academy. He then went on to study in Rome for four years, where he developed his skills as a sculptor and became well known for his portrait busts and monuments. His works were highly sought after by royalty and nobility throughout Europe, including King George III of England. He also created many public monuments in London, such as the monument to Admiral Lord Rodney at St Paul's Cathedral. Nollekens' works are now held in many museums around the world, including The British Museum and The Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
