Charles Joseph Natoire Collection

Charles Joseph Natoire was a French painter and art theorist of the Rococo period. He was born in Nancy, France in 1700 and studied at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. Natoire became a professor at the Academy in 1743, where he taught painting, drawing, sculpture, architecture and perspective. He also wrote several treatises on art theory. His works were primarily religious paintings that featured graceful figures with delicate features set against richly decorated backgrounds. His most famous work is The Coronation of St Catherine (1754) which hangs in the Louvre Museum today. Natoire's influence on French art during his lifetime was immense; his students included some of the most famous painters of his day such as Jean-Baptiste Greuze and Jacques-Louis David.
