Alexander Nasmyth Collection

Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840) was a Scottish landscape and portrait painter. He is best known for his pioneering use of the mezzotint technique to create highly detailed, atmospheric landscapes. He was also an innovator in the use of light and shade to create dramatic effects in his paintings. Nasmyth studied under Allan Ramsay, a renowned portrait painter, before setting up his own studio in Edinburgh in 1778. His work was popular with both the public and royalty alike, with King George IV commissioning him to paint several portraits during his reign. Nasmyth's influence on British art can be seen through the many pupils he taught throughout his career, including John Watson Gordon who went on to become one of Scotland's most celebrated painters. His legacy lives on today through numerous works held by galleries around the world as well as through a number of streets named after him across Scotland.
