Robert Walker Macbeth Collection

Robert Walker Macbeth was a Scottish painter and etcher who was known for his landscapes, portraits, and genre scenes. He was born in Glasgow in 1848 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1865 to 1870. After graduating, he traveled to Italy where he studied under Giovanni Costa. He then returned to Scotland and became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1877. Macbeth's works often featured rural scenes with figures engaged in everyday activities such as fishing or farming. His paintings were exhibited widely throughout Europe including at the Paris Salon, Royal Academy of Arts, Grosvenor Gallery, and Royal Scottish Academy. In addition to painting landscapes and genre scenes, Macbeth also created etchings which were highly regarded by critics for their technical skill as well as their composition. He died in London in 1910 after a long career that saw him become one of Scotland's most renowned painters of the 19th century.
