Eadweard Muybridge Collection

Eadweard Muybridge was a British-born photographer and inventor who is best known for his pioneering work in motion-picture projection. He was born in Kingston upon Thames, England in 1830 and moved to the United States at the age of 20. In 1872, he began experimenting with capturing motion on film and eventually developed a technique that used multiple cameras to capture a series of still images which could be projected as moving pictures. His most famous work was "The Horse in Motion", which showed how horses gallop by taking 12 consecutive photographs of a horse running on a track. This work revolutionized the understanding of animal locomotion and helped pave the way for modern cinema. Muybridge's other works include landscape photography, panoramic views, portraits, and studies of human and animal locomotion. He died in 1904 at the age of 74 after suffering from dementia for several years prior to his death.
