Samuel Finley Breese Morse was an American painter and inventor best known for inventing the single-wire telegraph system and Morse code. He was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts in 1791. He attended Yale College, where he studied painting and sculpture. After graduating from Yale, he moved to Europe to further his artistic studies. While there, he developed a passion for electricity and began experimenting with electromagnetism. In 1837, Morse successfully sent the first telegraph message over a wire from Washington D.C., to Baltimore using his code of dots and dashes that came to be known as Morse Code.
