Leopold Mozart Collection

Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) was an Austrian composer, violinist, and teacher. He is best known as the father and teacher of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Leopold was born in Augsburg, Bavaria, and studied at Salzburg University. He became a court musician for the Archbishop of Salzburg in 1743 and later became Kapellmeister (music director). Leopold wrote several symphonies, concertos, sonatas, operas, masses and other works during his lifetime. He also wrote a treatise on violin playing which was published posthumously in 1790. Leopold taught both Wolfgang and Nannerl music theory from their early childhoods; he is credited with giving them an excellent musical education that prepared them for their future successes. His influence on Wolfgang's development as a composer has been widely acknowledged by music historians.
