John Hamilton Mortimer Collection

John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-1779) was an English painter and draughtsman known for his portraits, history paintings, and landscapes. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768, and one of the first artists to be elected to the academy. His works were highly praised by his contemporaries, who compared him to Sir Joshua Reynolds. Mortimer's style combined elements from both classical antiquity and contemporary art movements such as Rococo. He is best known for his series of six paintings depicting scenes from Shakespeare's plays which he completed between 1776 and 1778.
