He was born in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme. He won the Prix de Rome in 1874 for his painting of The Death of Cato of Utica. His works were exhibited at the Salon from 1868 to 1901, and he received medals in 1889 and 1900.
