Mihaly von Munkacsy (1844-1900) was a Hungarian painter who is best known for his genre scenes, landscapes and portraits. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and later moved to Munich, where he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. His works were exhibited throughout Europe and America, including the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy in London. He was also awarded numerous medals for his work. His style was influenced by Dutch masters such as Rembrandt and Frans Hals, as well as French painters such as Corot and Courbet. His works often depicted everyday life with an emphasis on psychological insight into his subjects' emotions. Munkacsy's paintings are held in many major collections around the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, The Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia and The National Gallery of Hungary in Budapest.
