Francis Davis Millet Collection

Francis Davis Millet (1846-1912) was a prominent American painter, sculptor, and writer. He was born in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts and studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was a member of the National Academy of Design and exhibited his work at the Paris Salon. Millet's most famous works include The Last Moments of John Brown (1882), The Sower (1890), and The Mower (1892). He also wrote several books on art history, such as A History of Painting in Italy from the Second to Eighteenth Century (1903). In addition to his artistic pursuits, Millet served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross during World War I and died while helping victims aboard the Titanic when it sank in 1912. His legacy lives on through his works which are still celebrated today.
