James Otto Lewis Collection

James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) was an American painter, lithographer, and engraver. He is best known for his portraits of Native Americans and his work in the Hudson River School of painting. Lewis was born in Philadelphia and studied under Thomas Sully before moving to New York City in 1825. He traveled extensively throughout the United States, sketching Native Americans from various tribes. His works were highly praised for their accuracy and detail, as well as their ability to capture the spirit of the people he painted. In addition to his paintings, Lewis also created a number of lithographs which were widely distributed throughout the country. His work has been exhibited at numerous museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
