Judith Leyster Collection

Judith Leyster (1609-1660) was a Dutch Golden Age painter. She is best known for her genre scenes, which often depict merry companies of people enjoying themselves in taverns or playing music. Her works are characterized by their bright colors, lively brushwork, and strong sense of movement. Leyster was one of the few female artists to achieve success during the 17th century in the Netherlands. She was a member of both the Haarlem Guild of St Luke and the Utrecht Guild of St Luke, becoming one of only four women to be accepted into these prestigious organizations. Although she had many male pupils, she never married or had children and died in poverty at age 51. Her work has since been rediscovered and is now highly valued by art collectors around the world.
