John Frederick Lewis Collection

John Frederick Lewis (1804-1876) was an English painter and draughtsman. He is best known for his Orientalist paintings, which depicted the Middle East in a romanticized and idealized manner. He was born in London to a family of artists, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1822-26. His first major work, “The Reception of the Ambassador from Morocco by Charles II” (1830), established him as one of the leading Orientalist painters of his time. He also painted portraits and genre scenes, as well as landscapes during his travels throughout Europe and North Africa. In addition to painting, he wrote several books on art theory and technique, including “A Treatise on Oil Painting” (1847). Lewis' works are held in many public collections around the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
