Charles Robert Leslie (1794-1859) was an English genre painter and one of the founding members of the Royal Academy. He was born in London, where he studied under John Hoppner and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Leslie's work is known for its realism and attention to detail, particularly in his portraits. He also painted historical scenes, such as The Death of Wolfe (1825), which depicted a famous episode from the Seven Years' War. His works were popular during his lifetime, with many being purchased by King George IV and other members of the British royal family. Leslie was elected to the Royal Academy in 1828 and served as its President from 1845 until his death in 1859. His influence on British art can still be seen today through his students, including William Etty and Edwin Landseer.
