Charles Bird King Collection

Charles Bird King (1785-1862) was an American portrait artist who painted many prominent figures of his time. He was born in Newport, Rhode Island and moved to Washington D.C. In 1818 where he established a studio and became the first painter to be employed by the U.S government. His most famous works include portraits of Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams, James Monroe, Chief Justice John Marshall, and other members of Congress during the early 19th century. He also painted portraits of Native Americans from tribes such as the Pawnee and Sioux which were commissioned by President Jefferson for display at the White House. King's work is known for its realism and attention to detail which has made him one of America's most celebrated portrait artists in history.
