Washington Irving was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Irving was also the first American writer to achieve international fame and recognition. His other works include A History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty; The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus; Astoria: Adventures in Fur Trading; Bracebridge Hall; Tales Of A Traveller; Wolfert's Roost and Other Papers; Salmagundi: or The Whim-Whams & Opinions Of Launcelot Langstaff & Others. Irving's writing style is characterized by its wit, satire, irony and use of dialects. He is considered one of America's most important writers as he helped create a uniquely American literary identity during a time when British literature dominated early American literature.
