Robert Havell Collection

Robert Havell (1793-1878) was a British engraver, printer and publisher of natural history books. He is best known for his work on John James Audubon's Birds of America, which he printed between 1827 and 1838. Havell was born in London, the son of a copperplate engraver. He apprenticed with his father before becoming an independent engraver in 1816. In addition to working with Audubon on Birds of America, he also engraved plates for other natural history books including Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology and William Swainson's Exotic Ornithology. His skill as an engraver has been praised by many for its accuracy and beauty. Havell also worked as a publisher from 1825 until his retirement in 1865, producing works by some of the most renowned naturalists of the time such as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. His legacy lives on through his beautiful prints which are still admired today.
