Franz Hogenberg Collection

Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590) was a Flemish engraver and publisher of the 16th century. He is best known for his work in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, a series of city views published in six volumes between 1572 and 1617. The series included plans and views of cities from all over Europe, as well as some from Africa, Asia, and America. Hogenberg also produced maps for Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World), which was published in 1570. His engravings were highly detailed and often featured figures or scenes that provided context to the landscape being depicted. He also worked with other notable artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Matthaeus Merian, and Johannes Stradanus to produce works that are now considered masterpieces of art history.
