George Elgar Hicks (1824-1914) was an English painter and one of the most important members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was born in Lymington, Hampshire and trained as a portrait painter in London. His style was based on realism and often depicted everyday life scenes with a moralistic message. He painted many portraits of famous people such as Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens, William Gladstone, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Thomas Carlyle. He also painted several religious works including 'The Light of the World' which is one of his best known works. In addition to painting he also wrote poetry and essays about art theory which were published in magazines such as The Art Journal. George Elgar Hicks is remembered for his contribution to the Pre-Raphaelite movement and for bringing realism into British art during the 19th century.
