Hendrik Hondius Collection

Hendrik Hondius (1573-1650) was a Dutch engraver and publisher who is best known for his work on the Atlas Major, one of the most important atlases of its time. He was born in Amsterdam and apprenticed to Jodocus Hondius, his father's brother. In 1604 he moved to London where he worked with John Speed on the Theatre of Great Britaine. In 1606 he returned to Amsterdam and started publishing maps and atlases under his own name. He also published works by other cartographers such as Willem Blaeu, Jan Jansson, Nicolas Visscher and Johannes Blaeu. His most famous work is the Atlas Major which contains 594 maps in 11 volumes covering all parts of the world. The Atlas Major was published between 1662-1672 and became one of the most important atlases ever produced due to its accuracy, detail and beauty. Hendrik Hondius' legacy lives on today in his many works that are still admired by cartographers around the world.
