Francis Hayman Collection

Francis Hayman (1708-1776) was an English painter and illustrator. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768, and is best known for his work in the decorative arts. He painted portraits, landscapes, and scenes from literature. His most famous works include illustrations for Samuel Richardson's novel Pamela (1741) and designs for John Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728). Hayman also worked as a scene painter at Covent Garden Theatre from 1736 to 1776. His influence on British art extended beyond his own career; he taught many important artists including Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, and George Stubbs. Hayman was an important figure in the development of British art during the 18th century.
