Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916) was a French landscape painter of the Barbizon school. He was born in Valenciennes and studied under his father, an amateur artist, before attending the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His landscapes were often characterized by their muted colors and atmospheric effects. He also painted scenes of rural life, such as peasants working in fields or tending to animals. Harpignies was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and won several awards throughout his career, including a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
