Baron Pierre-Narcisse Guerin Collection

Baron Pierre-Narcisse Guerin was a French painter of the Neoclassical school. He was born in Paris in 1774, and his early training was with the neoclassical master Jacques-Louis David. He won the Prix de Rome in 1799, and subsequently spent four years studying at the French Academy in Rome. His paintings were mainly history pieces, often depicting scenes from classical antiquity or religious subjects. His best known works include 'The Death of Socrates' (1806) and 'The Oath of Horatii' (1801). Guerin also wrote several treatises on art theory, including 'Reflections on Beauty' (1814). He died in 1833 after a long career as an influential artist and teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts.
