Jean Fouquet Collection

Jean Fouquet (c. 1420-1481) was a French painter and miniaturist who is considered one of the most important artists of the 15th century. He was born in Tours and worked mainly in Paris, where he was court painter to King Charles VII. His style combined elements of both Northern and Italian Renaissance art, with an emphasis on realism and detail. His most famous work is the Melun Diptych (1450), which contains portraits of King Charles VII and his mistress Agnes Sorel as well as a self-portrait of Fouquet himself. Other notable works include The Virgin with Angels (1450) and The Annunciation (1460). Fouquet's influence can be seen in many later Renaissance painters, such as Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt and Watteau. He died in Tours in 1481 but his legacy lives on through his works which are still admired today for their beauty and technical skill.
