Mariano Fortuny Collection

Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and fashion designer. He was born in Granada and moved to Venice at the age of nine. He studied painting in Paris and Madrid before returning to Venice where he opened his own studio in 1895. His work is characterized by its vibrant colors, bold patterns, and intricate details. He is best known for his theatrical costumes which were often inspired by historical or mythological figures. His designs were revolutionary for their time as they incorporated new fabrics such as silk velvet and muslin with metallic threads. In addition to costume design, Fortuny also created paintings that depicted scenes from Venetian life as well as sculptures that explored the human form. Fortuny's legacy continues today through the Mariano Fortuny Museum located in Venice which houses many of his works from throughout his career.
