Edwin Forbes Collection

Edwin Forbes (1839-1895) was an American artist and illustrator who specialized in Civil War scenes. He was born in New York City, and studied at the National Academy of Design. During the Civil War, he served as a draftsman for the Union Army Topographical Engineers. After the war, he returned to New York and began working as a freelance illustrator for Harper's Weekly magazine. His illustrations were incredibly detailed and accurate depictions of battle scenes from both sides of the conflict. He also worked on several books about his experiences during the war, including "Life Studies of The Great Army" (1876). His work is still admired today for its historical accuracy and artistic merit.
