John E. Ferneley Collection

John E. Ferneley (1782-1860) was an English painter of sporting and animal scenes. He was born in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and apprenticed to a local coach painter at the age of 14. After his apprenticeship he moved to London where he worked as a scene painter for the Drury Lane Theatre. In 1810 he returned to Melton Mowbray and began painting hunting scenes, which became his specialty. His works were highly sought after by wealthy landowners who commissioned him to paint their horses, hounds, and other animals in action scenes from the hunt field. His works are characterized by their realism and attention to detail; they are also known for their use of light and shade that give them an almost three-dimensional effect. Ferneley's paintings are still highly prized today as some of the finest British sporting art from this period in history.
