William Faden Collection

William Faden (1750-1836) was an English cartographer, engraver, and publisher. He was born in London and apprenticed to the engraver Thomas Jefferys. After completing his apprenticeship, he opened a shop in Charing Cross where he sold maps, prints, and books. He also published his own works such as the Atlas of England and Wales (1777) which became very popular. In 1783 he was appointed Geographer to King George III and established William Faden & Co., a successful publishing business which continued until 1823 when it was taken over by his nephews Thomas Jefferys Jr. And William Home Lizars. Faden's work is highly regarded for its accuracy and detail; many of his maps are still used today as reference material for historical research. His legacy lives on through the company that bears his name: William Faden & Co., now known as Ltd., which continues to produce high quality prints from original copper plates created by him centuries ago.
