Richard Dighton Collection

Richard Dighton (1795-1880) was a British illustrator and caricaturist who is best known for his satirical works. He was born in London and began his career as an apprentice to a copperplate engraver. His early works were published in magazines such as The Satirist, The Scourge, and The Caricaturist. He also created illustrations for books such as the 1820 edition of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes and the 1825 edition of Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Dighton's most famous work is probably his series of caricatures depicting members of the British royal family, which were published between 1820 and 1830. His works are characterized by their wit, humor, and satire - often poking fun at political figures or social issues of the time - but also demonstrate a great skill in composition and line work. Richard Dighton's legacy continues to be celebrated today through exhibitions dedicated to his life's work.
