Jean Baptiste Debret Collection

Jean Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) was a French painter, lithographer, and art theorist. He is best known for his works depicting the life of slaves in Brazil during the colonial period. Debret was born in Paris and trained at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1816 he traveled to Brazil as part of a French diplomatic mission, where he stayed for five years. During this time he produced hundreds of drawings and paintings depicting Brazilian culture, including portraits of enslaved people living under Portuguese rule. His work helped to shape European perceptions of Brazilian society during this period. After returning to France in 1821, Debret continued to paint scenes from his travels until his death in 1848. His work remains an important source for understanding 19th century Brazilian history and culture.
