Richard Dadd Collection

Richard Dadd was a Victorian-era British painter, best known for his highly detailed and fantastical works. He was born in 1817 and began painting at an early age, developing a unique style that blended elements of Pre-Raphaelite art with Romanticism. His most famous works include 'The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke' (1855–1864) and 'Contradiction: Oberon and Titania' (1854–1858). In 1843, he travelled to the Middle East with Sir Thomas Phillips, producing many sketches which were later used as inspiration for his paintings. In 1853 he suffered a mental breakdown due to paranoia and delusions, leading to him being institutionalised until his death in 1886. Despite this setback, Dadd's work has been recognised as some of the most imaginative of the 19th century.
