Jacques Charles Collection

Jacques Charles (1746-1823) was a French physicist, mathematician, and balloonist who made important contributions to the fields of physics and chemistry. He is best known for his pioneering work in aerostatics, the study of gases and their properties. He discovered that gases expand when heated and contract when cooled, a phenomenon now known as Charles's law. He also developed an equation to calculate the volume of a gas at different temperatures. In addition to his scientific achievements, he is remembered for launching the first hydrogen-filled balloon in 1783 with two other scientists. This event marked the beginning of modern aviation history. His work had an immense influence on future generations of scientists and engineers who continued to explore new ways of using lighter-than-air technology for transportation purposes.
