Isaac Cruikshank Collection

Isaac Cruikshank (1764-1811) was a Scottish painter and caricaturist, best known for his satirical works. He was born in Edinburgh and apprenticed to a goldsmith before becoming an engraver. His early works were mainly political cartoons, which he produced for magazines such as The Political Register. He later moved to London and worked with publisher S.W Fores, producing prints that satirised the social life of the city. His most famous work is probably Gin Lane (1751), which depicted the effects of alcohol abuse on society at the time. He also produced illustrations for books such as Robert Burns' Poems (1799). Cruikshank's work has been highly influential in British art, inspiring many subsequent artists including William Hogarth and George Cruikshank, his son who followed in his footsteps as a caricaturist and illustrator.
