Lucas the Younger Cranach Collection

Lucas the Younger Cranach was a German Renaissance painter, printmaker, and publisher. He was born in 1515 in Kronach, Germany and was the son of Lucas Cranach the Elder. He studied under his father and became a master painter in 1537. His works were mainly religious paintings but he also painted portraits of famous people such as Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. He is best known for his woodcuts which were used to illustrate books such as Bibles or hymnals. In addition to painting and printmaking, he also ran a publishing house where he printed books with illustrations by himself or other artists from his workshop. Lucas the Younger Cranach died in 1586 leaving behind an impressive legacy of artworks that still influence modern art today.
