Leon Cogniet was a French painter and draughtsman of the 19th century. He was born in Paris in 1794 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jacques-Louis David. His works were mainly historical scenes, portraits, and genre paintings. He exhibited regularly at the Salon de Paris from 1817 to 1843, receiving several awards for his work. Cogniet's most famous painting is The Death of Caesar (1804), which is now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. He also painted many religious works such as The Martyrdom of St Stephen (1819) and The Baptism of Christ (1820). In addition to his paintings, he also produced lithographs for books such as Les Métamorphoses d'Ovide (1825). Leon Cogniet died in 1841 leaving behind a legacy of beautiful artwork that continues to be admired today.
