Private Samuel Chamberlain Collection

Private Samuel Chamberlain was an American soldier and artist who served in the Civil War. He was born in 1829 in Maine and enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 32. During his service, he kept a diary and sketched scenes of battle, which he later used as source material for his artwork. After being discharged from the army, Chamberlain moved to Boston where he studied art under William Morris Hunt and eventually became a successful painter. His works often depicted scenes from his time as a soldier, including battles, camp life, landscapes, portraits of fellow soldiers, and more. He also wrote several books about his experiences during the war which were published posthumously after his death in 1908. Private Samuel Chamberlain's work is now recognized as some of the most important visual records of America's Civil War era.
