William Caxton (c. 1422-1491) was an English merchant, diplomat, and writer who is credited with introducing the printing press to England in 1476. He was born in Kent and apprenticed as a mercer before travelling abroad to serve as a diplomat for Edward IV of England. In Bruges he learned about printing from Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer, and established his own print shop there in 1473. He printed over 100 books during his lifetime, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, which he published in 1478. His work revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge throughout Europe by making books more accessible to the public than ever before.
