John Gadsby Chapman (1808-1889) was an American painter and engraver. He was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and studied art in Philadelphia. His works include portraits of prominent figures such as President Andrew Jackson, General Winfield Scott and Commodore Stephen Decatur. He also painted historical scenes such as the Battle of New Orleans, the Battle of Lake Erie and the Landing of Columbus. Chapman is best known for his painting "The Baptism of Pocahontas," which hangs in the rotunda of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., as well as his murals at West Point Military Academy depicting key moments from American history.
