Leon Bakst was a Russian painter and designer who is best known for his set and costume designs for the Ballets Russes. He was born in Grodno, Belarus in 1866 and studied painting at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. His work was heavily influenced by Russian folk art, Persian miniatures, Japanese prints, and Art Nouveau. He designed costumes for many of Diaghilev's ballets including The Firebird (1910), Scheherazade (1910), Petrushka (1911), Le Spectre de la Rose (1911) and Cleopatra (1914). His designs were characterized by their bright colors, exotic patterns, rich textures and elaborate details which helped to create a sense of fantasy on stage. Bakst's influence extended beyond ballet to fashion design where his bold use of color inspired many designers including Coco Chanel.
