Josephine de Beauharnais Collection

Josephine de Beauharnais was a French socialite and the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. She was born in Martinique in 1763 to an aristocratic family. Josephine had two marriages prior to her marriage with Napoleon, both of which ended in divorce. She married Napoleon in 1796 and they had one son together, but the couple divorced in 1809 due to their inability to have children together. During her marriage with Napoleon, she was considered a style icon and rose from poverty to become one of the most influential women of her time. After their divorce, Josephine retired from public life and focused on managing her estate at Malmaison until her death in 1814. Her legacy lives on today as she is remembered for being an influential figure during the French Revolution and for being a devoted mother and wife who supported Napoleon throughout his rise to power.
