Bartholomeus Breenbergh Collection

Bartholomeus Breenbergh (1598-1657) was a Dutch Baroque painter, draughtsman, and etcher. He is best known for his landscapes of Rome and its surrounding countryside. His works are characterized by their strong light-dark contrasts and dramatic compositions. He was also one of the first artists to paint in the Italianate style, which featured classical ruins set against a backdrop of lush vegetation. Breenbergh's paintings were highly sought after during his lifetime and he received numerous commissions from prominent patrons such as the Elector Palatine Frederick V and King Charles I of England.
