Samuel Bourne Collection

Samuel Bourne (1834-1912) was an English photographer who is best known for his photographs of India in the late 19th century. He began his career as a banker in London, but soon left to pursue photography full time. He traveled extensively throughout India, capturing its people and landscapes with his camera. His work was highly acclaimed and he became one of the most important photographers of the period. His photographs were published in several books and exhibited widely throughout Europe and America. He also founded a photographic studio in Simla, India which he ran until 1877 when he returned to England for good.
