Friedrich Bouterwek Collection

Friedrich Bouterwek (1766-1828) was a German philosopher and literary critic. He was born in Göttingen and studied at the universities of Göttingen, Leipzig, Jena, and Berlin. His most important work is his "Geschichte der Aesthetik" (History of Aesthetics), which he wrote between 1802 and 1805. In this work, he argued that art should be judged by its aesthetic value rather than its moral content. He also believed that beauty could be found in all forms of art regardless of their origin or purpose. Bouterwek's influence on aesthetics has been significant throughout the 19th century and beyond; his ideas were particularly influential in Germany during the Romantic period. His works are still widely read today, as they provide insight into the development of modern aesthetics.
